love writing

i dream of being a journalist. i have tried being one too, when i was in college. i used to write for the school paper and it was special because my editor-in-chief is my cousin. some people find that odd because i was taking up a business course and the staff consisted mostly of students taking up liberal arts. aside from taking pride of my name being listed on the masthead, i especially enjoyed proofreading, where our job was to find errors. and we get to read and see the layout of the paper ahead of everyone else. i refuse to believe that i got in just because of my affiliation to the editor-in-chief, i was told that all the other editors approved of me being a staffer. and i think i was of much help to the progress of the Gazette that year.
in my freshman year in high school, i was encouraged to join writing competitions by the best teacher i’ve known. he was actually more like a father to us than just a teacher. he taught Filipino, which was not one of my favorite subjects, but i enjoyed that year that we were his students. so i joined writing contests everytime i had a chance.
in my junior year, we took up journalism. and i learned a lot from that subject, things that i have practiced and that i remember to this day. there was also another memorable experience from that subject, i was scolded by the teacher and worse, sent to the guidance counselor’s office. unfortunately, i was called to draw something on the board, a layout or something. i wasn’t prepared, i was distracted by the discussion during recess about who would go and buy chips with my friend. i lost my temper, and threw the eraser, which, naturally, pissed my teacher off…so my first counseling session. hmmm…
in my senior year, i joined the english club so i get to hang out with students who share my passion. i’ve tried tutoring but i didn’t enjoy it as much as writing. i was also a frequent fixture to the rostrum, for i often hosted or co-hosted programs sponsored by the club. it was during this time that i developed my public-speaking skills. which i would later use by hosting my friends’ debuts and being lector in their weddings, hehehe!

aside from my duties in the school paper, i also kept a diary in college…it was more like a book of letters to my long-distance boyfriend then (husband now), because i wanted to tell him about the things that go on with my life everyday but had neither the time and money to send letters to him that often. i planned to one day read that again with him when we’re finally together, i wonder where he kept that.

today, aside from the letters that i write him every now and then, this is all the writing that i do, blogging. i’m hoping to earn something from it like some of my friends, but in the mean time, i’ll just enjoy it as an outlet, an extension of my thoughts. also hoping that somehow it helps anyone out there, as an inspiration or maybe just a way to pass time. ;p
